The EV Revolution and Its Impact on Antifreeze Coolants

The electrification of the automotive industry is often seen as a death knell for traditional engine fluids. But while the internal combustion engine (ICE) may be fading, the need for advanced thermal management is more critical than ever. Electric vehicles (EVs) have no engine to cool, but they do have a sophisticated array of components that generate a significant amount of heat, most notably the battery pack and power electronics. This has created an entirely new segment within the antifreeze coolant market.

The primary function of an EV coolant is to maintain a stable and optimal temperature for the battery. If a battery gets too hot or too cold, its performance degrades, its lifespan shortens, and in extreme cases, it can pose a safety risk. This is why liquid cooling systems are becoming the standard for most modern EVs, including those from major players like Tesla and BMW.

However, EV coolants have very different requirements from their ICE counterparts. The most critical factor is electrical conductivity. An EV coolant must be a dielectric fluid—meaning it must have extremely low or no electrical conductivity to prevent short circuits and electrical hazards if it comes into contact with high-voltage battery components. Traditional ethylene glycol-based coolants with their standard additive packages are not suitable for this purpose. This has spurred a wave of innovation.

DuPont's AmberLite Resins for EV Coolant Purification

One excellent example of this innovation is the work of companies like DuPont. Recognizing the unique challenges of EV coolants, DuPont has developed specialized ion exchange resins, such as the AmberLite™ series, for the purification of glycol-water coolants within EVs. These resins help remove impurities that can arise from the degradation of coolant or other system components over the vehicle's lifetime. By ensuring the coolant remains free of these impurities, the system’s electrical properties are maintained, enhancing the safety and longevity of the battery and other electronics. This highlights a new direction for the market: not just producing the fluid, but also providing the technology to maintain its critical properties throughout the vehicle's life cycle.
